Xero is a powerful platform, but many users only scratch the surface of what it can do. Here are ten tips that will save you time and give you better financial visibility.
1. Set up bank feeds
If you haven't already, connect your bank accounts to Xero via bank feeds. This automatically imports your transactions daily, eliminating manual data entry.
2. Use bank rules
Bank rules automatically categorise recurring transactions - your monthly rent, your phone bill, your regular supplier payments. Set them up once and save hours every month.
3. Send invoices from Xero
Create and send invoices directly from Xero. You can set up invoice templates, add your logo, and even enable online payment via Stripe or GoCardless.
4. Use the mobile app
The Xero mobile app lets you capture receipts, send invoices, and check your cash position from anywhere. Particularly useful for expenses on the go.
5. Set up repeating invoices
If you invoice clients the same amount each month, set up a repeating invoice. Xero will create and send it automatically.
6. Use tracking categories
Tracking categories let you report on different parts of your business - different departments, projects, or locations. Invaluable for understanding where your profit is really coming from.
7. Reconcile regularly
Don't let your reconciliation pile up. A few minutes every day or every few days is much easier than a monthly marathon.
8. Use the dashboard
The Xero dashboard gives you an at-a-glance view of your financial position - outstanding invoices, bills due, bank balances, and cash flow. Make it your morning check-in.
9. Explore the app marketplace
Xero integrates with hundreds of apps - from inventory management to CRM to payroll. Explore the marketplace to find tools that can streamline your specific workflows.
10. Get proper training
Xero's own training resources are good, but working with a Xero partner like Jenkins & Co. means you get personalised guidance specific to your business.
