Choosing the Right Accounting Software for Your Business

With so many options available, how do you choose the right accounting software? We compare Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, and more to help you find the best fit.

Choosing the right accounting software is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your business's financial management. The right choice saves you hours every month; the wrong choice creates headaches.

Xero

Xero is our recommendation for most small and medium businesses. It's cloud-based, has an excellent mobile app, integrates with hundreds of third-party tools, and has a clean, intuitive interface. It's particularly strong for businesses that need to manage multiple currencies or have complex invoicing requirements.

QuickBooks

QuickBooks is a strong alternative, particularly for businesses that need robust job costing or project tracking. It's slightly more complex than Xero but offers more granular reporting.

FreeAgent

FreeAgent is popular with freelancers and very small businesses. It's simpler than Xero or QuickBooks and includes self-assessment tax return features, which can be useful for sole traders.

What to look for

Bank feeds (automatic import of bank transactions), MTD compliance, payroll integration, and good mobile apps are the key features to prioritise. Also consider the quality of support and the size of the user community - you want to be able to find answers easily.

Our recommendation

For most of our clients in Gloucestershire, Xero is the right choice. We're Xero Silver Partners and Xero Payroll Specialists, which means we can offer expert setup, training, and ongoing support.
